چکیده

Serum levels of albumin (alb), ceruloplasmin (Cp), a ̂ antitrypsin (AT), a r acid glycoprotein (AGP) and transferrin (Ti) were quantitatively deter mined by electroimmunodiffusion in 50 normal men and 75 normal women of varying ages. Alb, Cp and Tfare carrier proteins, AT is a protease inhibitor, and AGPs are acute phase reactants, with protective functions in inflamma tion. Subjects were grouped as follows: 20 to 44 years, 45 to 54 (an average statistical age at menopause ± 5 years), and over 55. Differences related to sex and age were noted. These values are to serve, however, as controls for studies of rheumatic disorders in which sex and age are significant factors in demography. normal individuals, the m iddle-aged group of persons, by age, was clustered about the average age of menopause (49 years) . 8 This common change in physiol ogy was felt to provide a more definitive marker of aging than did classification based on the number of trips around the sun. Three of these glycoproteins are carrier p ro te in s—ceruloplasm in for copper, transferrin for iron, and albumin for drugs, hormones, and many other substances. T hree are acute phase reac tan ts— ceruloplasmin, a j-anti trypsin, and «j-acid glycoprotein. Ceruloplasmin is both a car rier and an acute phase protein. All com pounds are produced by the liver, differ in composition, and may have additional actions.2,5. Introduction Definition of abnormal by biochemical technique requires definition of normal by similar techniques. For a prospective study of patients with rheumatic disor ders, serum levels were determined of albumin (alb), ceruloplasmin (Cp), antitrypsin (AT), «j-acid glycoprotein (AGP), and transferrin (Tf) in 75 normal women and 50 men. In providing age and sex matched controls, information was ob tained on effects of aging as well as differ ences associated with sex. In categorizing Address reprints to: Charles W. Serum concentrations of 10 acute-phase proteins in healthy term and preterm infants from birth to age 6 months.

Aiming to define the evolution pattern of 10 acute-phase proteins in early infancy, we measured nephelometrically the serum concentrations of albumin, prealbumin, retinol-binding protein, transferrin, ceruloplasmin, hemopexin, haptoglobin, alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, alpha 2-macroglobulin, and alpha 1-antitrypsin in 395 term and preterm infants (gestational ages 26-41 weeks). Measurements were p...

Age- and sex-specific pediatric reference intervals: study design and methods illustrated by measurement of serum proteins with the Behring LN Nephelometer.

We analyzed blood from 450 healthy children and adolescents, ages one to 19 y, as well as term and preterm infants, to define age- and sex-specific reference intervals for numerous blood constituents. Reference intervals were derived by using nonparametric methods to determine the 0.025 and 0.975 fractiles. Ten serum proteins were measured with the Behring LN Nephelometer. Girls over 10 years o...

Hepatic Proteins and Inflammatory Markers in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients

BACKGROUND Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic disease that causes chronic synovial inflammation eventually leading to joint destruction and disability. The aim of this study was to determine the variations of hepatic proteins, myeloperoxidase, and iron in rheumatoid arthritis Tunisian patients and their implications in inflammation and in iron metabolism. METHODS Ove...

The competitive effects of serum proteins on cell adhesion.

Binding curves for the adsorption of plasma fibronectin, alpha-1-antitrypsin, alpha-2-macroglobulin, ceruloplasmin, transferrin and bovine serum albumin to plain and to hydroxylated polystyrene surfaces were measured. These curves were correlated with the adhesion of BHK cells and leucocytes to these adsorbed protein surfaces in protein-free culture media. Hydroxylated polystyrene adsorbed less...

Ceruloplasmin can substitute for rabbit serum in stimulating the growth of Treponema denticola.

The growth of Treponema denticola in a complex medium was stimulated by human ceruloplasmin and, to a lesser extent, albumin, alpha-1-antitrypsin, alpha-1-acid glycoprotein, and alpha-2-macroglobulin. Human ceruloplasmin could stimulate growth of T. denticola as well as or better than 5% rabbit serum, with a dose-response relationship of between 1 and 5 mg of ceruloplasmin per ml of culture med...
